JCC welcomes new VISTA to oversee literacy programs, Marcia Cole
Jackson Community College is pleased to welcome Marcia Cole, recently sworn in as a member of AmeriCorps*VISTA, the nearly 40-year-old national service program dedicated to helping fight poverty in the United States. Cole has been assigned to Jackson Community College to help develop a literacy program serving the needs of the community.
Cole, who was born and raised in Michigan, has been an active volunteer in the world of literacy for many years as well as bringing a wealth of experience from her educational background. In her new role as an AmeriCorps*VISTA, she will be collaborating with various establishments in the community that have existing literacy programs, in addition to creating a program that will serve the needs of Jackson Community College and the surrounding area.
"We envision a program that will help individuals, strengthen our community, and give something back to all involved," said Charlotte Finnegan, dean of foundational studies.
For 40 years, AmeriCorps*VISTA has been helping bring communities and individuals out of poverty. Today, nearly 7,000 volunteers serve in hundreds of nonprofit organizations and public agencies throughout the country - working to fight illiteracy, improve health services, create businesses, increase housing opportunities or bridge the digital divide.
Cole is JCC's second VISTA. Shannon Zoet is currently in her second year with the College working on coordinating service learning opportunities in the community.
