5/5/06 For immediate release Commencement to feature popular running columnist John Bingham, 'The Penguin'
Jackson Community College will host commencement exercises for the 2005-06 academic year at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, in the Sheffer Music Hall, Potter Center. Keynote speaker for the evening will be columnist John Bingham, also known as "The Penguin," whose monthly columns appear in Runner's World magazine. A popular writer and speaker, Bingham turned his life around at age 43, making the transition from an overweight couch potato to runner. He has now been running for 13 years and completed 40 marathons and hundred of 5K and 10K races. He encourages all people to get active with walking or running, and travels nearly 300 days a year leading marathon pace groups, speaking to runners at all levels and his ever-growing number of fans. He is passionate about drawing newcomers to the sport. Also at the ceremony, JCC will present the Dr. Ethelene Jones Crockett Distinguished Alumni Award and Distinguished Service Award. The Crockett Award is being present to Frederick "Rick" Davies, president of Comerica Bank Jackson region, and the Distinguished Service Award will be presented to businessman Dale Smith, owner of Prestige Aircraft Co. LLC, and former manager of the Golden Jets hockey team. JCC students participating in the ceremony will include Student Parliament President Brandon M. Goyings and graduating class representative Roland L. Anderson, of Jackson. The College hosts commencement ceremonies each spring for students who complete their requirements from the previous four semesters. Also participating in the ceremony will be the Jackson Community Concert Band and JCC Concert Choir. Admission is by ticket only. |
