JCC Fall enrollment increases in both number of students, hours enrolled
Jackson Community College’s Fall enrollment is up in both the number of hours enrolled and student headcount, the highest the College has seen in the last six years.
At the opening of the Fall semester, the College’s enrollment was up 4 percent in overall headcount, at 5,341 students compared to 5,148 at last year’s start. Billing contact hours, which represent the actual time spent in class and are the basis for tuition, are up 6 percent, at 55,031.94 hours, compared to 52,021.09 for opening day 2005.
The number of full-time students increased again this year, now representing 44 percent of JCC’s student body, up from 42 percent the last two years. There is a slight boost in the number of students 21 and younger, nearly two-thirds of whom (65 percent) are attending full-time.
JCC’s minority enrollment has increased to 8.9 percent of overall enrollment, with 481 students identifying themselves as ethnic minorities, compared to 448 students last year. Minority enrollment has grown 2.4 percent over the past five years.
Enrollment continues to grow and fluctuate throughout the semester as Session II classes get underway.
“We are pleased to see more and more students making Jackson Community College their choice,” said Cindy Allen, executive director of community relations and the performing arts. Several factors have helped to contribute to the increase at the College, Allen said, such as bringing back sports, numerous efforts at connecting with the community more based on suggested recommendations of the College’s Citizens Advisory Committee, and the start of construction of student housing on campus. Students also continue to choose JCC for its quality, convenience, transferability of courses and affordability.
