September 12th, 2006 For immediate release You’ve got a right: Constitution Day set for Sept. 18Americans base their rights as citizens in the U.S. Constitution. Jackson Community College will present activities for Constitution Day on Monday, Sept. 18. Constitution Day is now in its second year following a federal mandate requiring public schools to hold and educational program for students on the anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787. “This is a day to remember and examine our U.S. Constitution, the document upon which our society is founded,” said Larissa Nemoianu, assistant professor of history and chair of the event. This year’s activities include a panel discussion on “Free Speech and Academic Freedom in the Digital Age,” with area business leaders and professionals, JCC faculty and students. It will include:
The panel discussion will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Federer Rooms, Potter Center, and the public is welcome. Other events will include voter registration of students, and a character from history will read the First Amendment at noon. JCC’s Atkinson Library has compiled a special display with a variety of books relating to the Constitution, a new book on the Patriot Act and others, and some reprinted articles that examine “Free Speech in a Digital Age.” There is also a large display of artifacts, heirlooms and mementos representing American culture with the theme “Home Front During War Times,” in the hallway display case outside the library in Walker Hall. |
