April 9th, 2007 For immediate release JCC student art show begins April 10Jackson Community College art students will present their Student Art Show beginning with a reception at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 10 in the Potter Center. The show will be up through May 9, JCC’s commencement. All students involved in art classes at JCC have been invited to submit a piece for consideration in the adjudicated art show. The exhibit will include samples of what students have worked on throughout the year, in all types of visual media. Lori Swope Sten of Brooklyn entered an acrylic painting of a skeleton entitled “Last Laugh,” which she said makes a statement about death not having the last laugh for artists, who often live on through their work. Swope Sten is in her second semester at JCC after returning to college and is working toward a certificate in studio art. She assisted in framing several works for the show. “I love it here at JCC, it’s been a lot of fun. For people wanting to go back to school who are older, give JCC a try.” Michaela Thornburg of Jackson is in her first year at JCC and has entered a charcoal drawing of a toddler in the show. “I’m drawn to the emotions from people, what their faces show. I like to try to capture that.” Steve Adams of Jackson is in his fourth semester at JCC and entered a mixed media piece, “I’ll Follow You Into the Dark.” His art classes have included drawing, ceramic and three-dimensional design at JCC, and he hopes to transfer to Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids. “I hope everyone comes out and supports the show. There’s a lot of great artwork here.”
