Potter, Phelan honored by statewide organization

Jackson Community College is pleased to announce that longtime Board of Trustees member Dr. George Potter, and JCC President Daniel Phelan, were recently honored by the Michigan Community College Association.

Potter received the Trustee Service Award from the MCCA. Potter retired after 2006 following 44 years of service to the JCC Board of Trustees. He was active not only at the local level but also at the state and national levels as an advocate for community colleges. He received several awards throughout his years, including Jackson’s Outstanding Young Man Award in 1967, the M. Dale Ensign Community College Leadership Award in 1974 as the nation’s outstanding community college trustee, and the American Association of Community Colleges’ Trustee Leadership Award in 1984.

Phelan received the Distinguished Service Award from the MCCA. He served as the 2006-07 chairperson for the MCCA. Phelan has been president of Jackson Community College since 2001 and has been a leader in many improvements to the College, including a new building in Adrian, JCC @ VO-TECH, renovations to McDivitt Hall on campus and construction of two new buildings, William Atkinson Hall and Campus View student housing, re-introducing sports to the campus, and renovations to the Hillsdale LeTarte Center.

These awards were presented at the 2007 MCCA Awards Banquet at Grand Traverse Resort earlier this month. MCCA represents all 28 public community colleges in Michigan.
