Concert Band kicks of season with fall concert
The Jackson Community Concert Band will kick off its 21st season with a fall concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18 in the Harold Sheffer Music Hall, Potter Center.
The concert will begin with the exciting “Sinfonia Nobilissima,” by award-winning composer Robert Jager. This will be followed by “Espana Rhapsody” by Emmanuel Chabrier. This orchestra masterpiece was transcribed by Mark Hindsley, who was director of bands at the University of Illinois. Robert Russell Bennett’s “Symphonic Songs for Band” will complete the first half of the concert. Bennett was an arranger of Broadway shows for over 40 years. The “Symphonic Songs” is a staple of band literature with beautiful and complex melodies, and lots of humor, too.
The band will continue with the “Manhattan Beach” march by John Philip Sousa, written by Sousa as a gift to the Manhattan Beach Resort where his band performed for several summers. The next selection will be “Eine Kleine Yiddishe Ragmusik” by British composer Adam Gorb. This new composition is a unique synthesis of a Jewish traditional folk dance with Scott Joplin ragtime. The band will then perform “Where Never Lark Or Eagle Flew,” by James Curnow. This work was inspired by the poem “High Flight” by John Gillespie Magee, Jr. which will be read by Larry Shaltis. This performance is dedicated to the memory of the late Stan Grady, longtime Jackson area musician and former band member who passed away this fall. The final selection on the program will be “Russian Christmas Music” by Alfred Reed. This powerful composition is based on Russian liturgical melodies.
The Jackson Community Concert Band was established in 1987 and is comprised of JCC students and community members, under the direction of Associate Professor Ronald L. Douglass. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased in advance by calling the Potter Center Box Office at 517.796.8600, or at the door the day of the concert.
