'Nunsense' 25th anniversary tour featuring Sally Struthers coming to JCC's Potter Center

Jackson Community College’s Potter Center welcomes the funny and charming musical comedy “Nunsense,” now on its 25th anniversary national tour starring two-time Emmy Award winner Sally Struthers, at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 30.

“Nunsense” tells the zany story of the Little Sisters of Hoboken, who discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poised 52 fellow sisters, and money must now be raised for burials!  To help raise the money, the sisters decide to put on a variety show. The delightfully wacky show has become an international phenomenon with more than 5,000 productions worldwide and has been translated into 21 languages.

“Nunsense” was written by Dan Goggin, originally from Alma, Mich., who first went to New York City to study as a classical countertenor. Goggin received the 1986 Outer Critics' Circle Awards given to “Nunsense” for Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Music. “Nunsense” and “Nunsense 2: The Second Coming,” both starring Rue McClanahan, have been recorded for the A&E Television Network. “Nunsense 3: The Jamboree” toured the U.S. starring Georgia Engel and has been recorded for television at the Grand Ole Opry starring Vicki Lawrence. “Nunsense A-Men!” opened at the 47th Street Theatre in New York in June 1998 and has since been produced with "Laugh-Ins" Arte Johnson, impressionist Frank Gorshin, and Olympic Champion Greg Louganis. “Nuncrackers: The Nunsense Christmas Musical” premiered in October 1998, followed by a national tour starring Dody Goodman, Jeff Trachta and Dawn Wells. The “Nuncrackers” television special playing the PBS network starring Rue McClanahan with guest star John Ritter, received an Emmy nomination for Best Musical Score.

For this 25th anniversary, Goggin is again directing, and with the addition of Sally Struthers, he said “With her wonderful talent, and knack for musical comedy – we think this tour will enchant as well as present the production for a new generation to discover.”

Sally Struthers is a two-time Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award winner for her performance in the groundbreaking series “All in the Family.” She starred in the Fox television series “9 to 5” and her own CBS series “Gloria.” Her recurring roles include the CBS comedy “Still Standing” and the CW’s highly acclaimed “Gilmore Girls.”

Tickets are available for $38, $34 and $28 from the Potter Center Box Office. For more information call 517.796.8600, or visit online at www.jccmi.edu under “Visitors & Events” and “Events.”
