For immediate release Men's soccer coming to JCCJackson Community College will add another sport, men’s soccer, to its intercollegiate athletics program starting this Fall 2008 semester. “Soccer was part of the original plan to reintroduce athletics, but budget-wise we wanted to start more conservatively,” said Stephen Bloomfield, JCC athletic director and assistant dean for student life. The College reinstituted athletics in 2006 in a two-phase approach, with men’s and women cross country, men’s baseball and women’s softball starting the first year. This 2007-08 academic year has seen the start of women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball added to the existing sports. Bloomfield said the College will start with men’s soccer, with hopes of adding women’s soccer in the future. JCC will compete in National Junior College Athletic Association Division I men’s soccer. Twelve scholarships will be awarded to soccer players to build the team. “Teams are already trying to schedule games with us,” Bloomfield said. “Right now, we’re looking at our facilities and what needs to be done. In future weeks, we will be interviewing and hiring coaches, then put them to work on recruiting.” |
