JCC  Board of Trustees welcomes Sheila Patterson

The Jackson Community College Board of Trustees welcomed new trustee Sheila Patterson, who will replace retiring trustee Charles Anderson, to the board Monday night.

Patterson works as a business support consultant in the facilities operation department for Consumers Energy, a post she’s held since 2002.  Since 2005 she’s also assumed the role as health, safety and environmental coordinator.  She helps to ensure that the 80-plus buildings Consumers Energy has throughout the state of Michigan with internal auditing policy and procedures to comply with OSHA and MIOSHA Standards.

“We are very pleased to have Sheila join us on the Board of Trustees,” said Dennis DaPra, chairman.  “She has an excellent record of service and leadership to the community, and we appreciate her lending her talents to the College and its students.”

Patterson earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Spring Arbor College in 1993, and also earned a Master’s in Business Administration degree in 2001 from Spring Arbor University.  She has been active in the community, serving a four-year term on the Jackson Public School Board of Education, 2004-‘08; serves on the executive committee of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Jackson branch; served from 2004-‘06 on the City of Jackson Civil Service Commission; serves as a board member for the Salvation Army; served as a board member from 2004-’06 for Family Services and Children’s Aid; served on the Cool Cities committee from 2003-’05; volunteered with St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Youth Group for several years; and volunteered with the Michigan Department of Transportation Meals on Wheels.  At Consumers Energy, she belongs to the CMS (Community Minded Services) Club, serving as vice president, president and member.

The Jackson Business and Professional Women’s Organization nominated Patterson for their Young Careerist in 2004, and she is a graduate of the 2004 Jackson Community Leadership Academy presented by the Greater Jackson Chamber of Commerce.

“I’m truly excited about the opportunity to serve on the College board,” Patterson said. “With my role on the JPS board, I feel this is a natural bridge between the largest area high school and our community college.”

Patterson will fulfill Anderson’s current term, which expires in November 2008, when she may choose to run for a six-year term.
