Forensics team competes at Novice Nationals

Jackson Community College’s forensics team left Thursday for the Novice Nationals at the University of West Florida in Pensacola. The team has participated in nearly a dozen forensics and debate events so far this year.

At the Michigan Intercollegiate Speech League state tournament, held Feb. 29 & March 1 at Hillsdale College, JCC students Monica Rasmussen and Montgomery Beauchene competed. Beauchene took seventh place in Poetry Interpretation and missed the finals by 1 percentage point. As a team, JCC finished second in the community college bracket to Oakland Community college. There were three community colleges represented, with the addition of Delta College.  Twelve teams competed overall.

Earlier this season, Beauchene took top honors in the poetry category at the Bowling Green State University “Superhero Tournament” on Feb. 23, and received the additional honor of top novice. Teammate Kaitlin McFee took seventh place in Prose Interpretation.

At the MISL Novice tournament held Feb. 2 at Wayne State University, Rasmussen placed seventh in Impromptu Speaking and third in Prose Interpretation, while Beauchene took ninth in Poetry Interpretation.

The JCC team will finish the season by attending the Phi Rho Pi National tournament and convention in April in Chicago. The Speech Club is open to all students upon registration in LTL 301 or SPH 101.  For more information about speech activities at JCC, please contact the director of forensics, Paige Beauchene.
