MSU volleyball standout Katie Johnson to coach at JCC

Jackson Community College is pleased to announce that Michigan State University volleyball standout Katie Johnson to be assistant coach for the 2008-09 women’s volleyball team with coach Leigh Ann Swihart.

Johnson is a Brooklyn native and graduate of Columbia Central High School.  She played varsity volleyball for MSU for five years, and was team captain in 2005, co-captain in 2006, and captain in 2007.  In 2007, she was sixth overall in the Big Ten Conference for kills, averaging 4.52 per game.  In 2006 she was an All-Big Ten Honorable Mention selection and shared MSU Outstanding Offensive Player Award with a teammate.  In 2007 the Spartan squad made it to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament.

Johnson is a senior at MSU studying apparel and textile design. After taking the opportunity to go to Korea this spring, she will finish up her classes next spring at MSU, and will coach in the fall.

Johnson played for Swihart three years at Columbia Central, and also one year at MSU when Swihart was a staff assistant there, so they do have a relationship as coach/player, and will now be coach/coach.

“I’m super excited to work with these ladies,” Johnson said. “It should be a good experience.”
