Enrollment continues to grow; increases seen in full-time students, minority enrollment
Enrollment continues to grow at Jackson Community College. Fall enrollment figures show that both the student count and the number of hours they are enrolled in are both at their highest point of the past five years.
At the 10th day of the Fall semester, JCC’s headcount, at 6,690 students, is up 5 percent overall from one year ago, and almost 19 percent from five years ago (2004 compared to 2008). Billing contact hours, which represent the actual time spent in class, are up nearly 10 percent from last Fall semester, breaking 69,000 hours. That is an increase of almost 28 percent from five years ago.
Demographic trends of JCC students continue to change also. This Fall, 47 percent of students are enrolled full-time, 47 percent of students are under the age of 22, and the number of minority students is the highest ever at JCC.
“We are pleased to see our enrollment figures increase and that more and more students are making JCC their choice for higher education,” said Cindy Allen, executive director of community relations and the performing arts. “The College has made several improvements and changes in recent years, and it is exciting to see that students are responding positively.”
Nearly 10 percent of the total Fall 2008 10th day enrollment is of ethnic minority, 658 students. That is an increase of 41 percent, almost 200 students, in the number of students of color from five years ago.
“We are extremely pleased with the enrollment statistics, especially for students of color,” said Lee Hampton, director of the Office of Multicultural Relations. “I believe this is a direct result of the hard work put in by what our marketing, admissions, advising, community relations and the Office of Multicultural Relations are doing. I also believe the message of the necessity of higher education is beginning to resonate with the community of color.”
Enrollment figures show increases in billing contact hours at all JCC locations, Jackson campus, Lenawee and Hillsdale county campuses, as well as in online distance learning. For Fall 2008, the Jackson campus accounts for 63 percent of the billing contact hours; Lenawee 16 percent; Internet 14 percent; and Hillsdale, 6 percent.
