JCC students' writings honored in LAND competition
Jackson Community College is pleased to announce that six students were named finalists and three were first-place winners in the Liberal Arts Network for Development (LAND) Student Scholars writing contest.
The Student Scholars competition is designed to encourage and reward quality academic work by students in community colleges. Teachers from a variety of subject areas are invited to select the best term papers and project reports and enter them in the competition. The top three entries in each of 17 categories (science, literature, technology, etc.) are selected as finalists and asked to present their paper at the LAND Student Scholars Conference held Sept. 20 at Wayne County Community College in Detroit. Each first-place winner then receives a monetary award, and his or her essay will be published.
Those honored include:
Five of the six students are current or past members of JCC’s Writing Fellows program. Writing Fellows are JCC students who are selected to participate in an intensive writing workshop class and receive a scholarship that pays for their class and books. Each Fellow is mentored by a faculty member on campus, and each also spends time tutoring other JCC students.
