Slide in to Trombone Fest for Father's Day
7 p.m. Sunday, June 20, Potter Center
In a concert that's truly one of a kind, Jackson Community College's Front Porch Series will continue this Sunday evening with a Trombone Fest. The concert begins at 7 p.m. on the front porch of the Potter Center.
Now in its 19th year, the Trombone Fest is one of the longest running of its kind. Sixteen trombone players from all over Michigan - Ann Arbor, Detroit, Jackson, Lansing and Kalamazoo - will perform an evening of music spanning the Renaissance to the present day. The first half of the concert will feature trombone ensemble music from the past 600 years, from early German posaune (trombone) choirs which became popular, to the emergence of trombone ensemble music in the 1950s and 1960s at music schools in this U.S. The second half of the concert will feature the addition of a jazz rhythm section joining the trombones on a number of jazz standards and show tunes.
"It will be a neat balance to the first half. This concert shows how versatile the trombone really is," said Ron Douglass, director of the Jackson Community Concert Band and a trombonist.
These concerts are fun, free, accessible and guaranteed - activities will move indoors in case of inclement weather. Persons wishing to pre-arrange seating may call ahead at (517) 796-8559; otherwise, audience members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. Barbecue dinner will be available for concert-goers beginning about a half hour before the performance and running through the show, for a cost of $6.
