Longtime Professor Ann Green assumes dean's post

Jackson Community College is pleased to announce the appointment of Ann M. Green, longtime professor of language, literature and arts, to the dean of arts and sciences at the College.

Green is beginning her 29th year at Jackson Community College this fall.  She grew up in San Francisco, Calif., and earned bachelor's and master's degrees in English literature from San Francisco State University.  She taught for four years at Northern Michigan University, and completed her Doctor of Arts in English from the University of Michigan.

In addition to teaching classes such as creative writing, humanities and film, Green has been involved in quasi-administrative type positions since coming to campus.  She started the JCC Winter Film Series her first year at the College, which provides an opportunity to examine the various aspects of film and how it has been viewed as an art form.  For the past 10 years the Film Series has been held at the Michigan Theatre, downtown Jackson.  She has served as a department chair four times for various departments, including developmental education (which she helped to establish in 1983), English, collaborative learning, and the current language, literature and arts department.  She believes her new position will broaden and continue her previous administrative experiences.

As dean of arts and sciences, Green will be responsible for the language, literature and arts department; behavioral science, math and engineering department; science, health and physical fitness; and the foundation studies department, which includes the Atkinson Library.  Dean of Occupational Education Joyce Lockman oversees professional studies, information technology education, allied health and nursing.  Green replaces former Dean David Sam, who left JCC in 2003 for another position.

"I want to focus on making the good things that faculty do more visible in the college and in the community.  I think it's a real secret how much people here care about each other and about our students," Green said.

Green has also been very active in the community, serving on the board and as president of the Michigan Shakespeare Festival, and a longstanding local writing group, the Columbia Women Writers.  She serves on the board of the Arts and Culture Alliance of Jackson County (ACAJC) and started the initial work on the Cultural Assessment of Jackson County.  She lives at Lake Columbia with her husband, Elmer (Sonny) Sbach.  They have two grown sons, Rob, who lives and works in Ann Arbor, and William, who will be a sophomore at Kalamazoo College.
