January programs examine King, 'Inherit the Wind'

Jackson Community College will offer the following informative and historical programs for the month of January:

  • "Citizen King":  This documentary traces Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s efforts to recast himself by embracing causes beyond the civil rights movement, by becoming a champion of the poor and an outspoken opponent of the war in Vietnam.  Tapping into a rich archive of photographs and film footage and using diaries, letters and eyewitness accounts of fellow activists, friends, journalists, political leaders and law enforcement officials, this film brings fresh insights to King's impossible journey, his charismatic leadership and his truly remarkable impact.  This program will be presented by the Atkinson Library at 1 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 12-13 in Federer Room B.
  • The Book Club @ JCC "A Season for the Dead" by David Hewson: In a hushed Vatican reading room, the scene was shocking: a crazed professor shot dead after brandishing evidence of a grisly crime.  Moments later, two bodies are found in a nearby church, each with a gruesome calling card from the killer.  Set amidst a bizarre killing spree in modern Rome, "A Season for the Dead" is a bewitching blend of history and drama, sensuality and suspense.  This book will be reviewed at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14 in Federer Room B Call (517) 796-8622 for more information.
  • The Movies @ JCC: "Inherit the Wind": When a young Tennessee teacher is prosecuted for teaching the theory of evolution in a public school, he receives unwanted public attention as well as the legal advice of a giant.  Spencer Tracy plays the role based on Clarence Darrow, the eloquent defense attorney, and Fredric March storms his way through a part based on Williams Jennings Bryan, the failed presidential candidate (and famed orator) who prosecuted the case.  Gene Kelly plays a character based on the acid-penned H.L. Mencken, reporting on the trial and caustically commenting on the absurdity of the human animal.  This movie will be presented at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18 in Federer Room B.  Call (517) 796-8622 for more information.
