Program support possibility for Jackson Community College

Early indications from the governor and Michigan Legislature suggest that Jackson Community College could be the recipient of $7.5 million dollars in capital outlay funds for instructional program expansion at the College.

College officials learned Wednesday that it had been included in a preliminary budget that would provide an initial planning grant authorization leading to the eventual receipt of $7.5 million.  If approved by the legislature and governor as part of the state budgeting process, college officials would undertake a planning and design process to expand facility and information technologies and library sciences.  The planning process would take approximately one year, with construction beginning no later than two years from time of approval.

The challenge remaining for JCC, assuming that it is approved as proposed, is the availability for the College to find the 50 percent match requirements to make this vision a reality.  College officials will work with the Board of Trustees over the next few months to frame the direction of this possible program expansion and identify strategies for generating the 50 percent match requirements.

The College also learned Wednesday of the governor's executive order (2005-07) which includes a 1.6 percent reduction across the board in state operation support.  JCC will see a reduction in its general operation budget of $197,000 in this current fiscal year.  This latest executive order is on the heels of four years of continuing reduction in state aid or about $1.3 million dollars of its general operation budget.

"This funding would go a long way in helping to improve our instructional facilities," said Cindy Allen, JCC's vice president for institutional advancement.  "We are cautiously optimistic."
