JCC comedy takes aim at unpleasantness: Acting students perform 'UTBU' 8 p.m. Friday & Saturday, April 22-23, Potter Center
Jackson Community College's Department of Theatre will present the "explosive" comedy, "UTBU - Unhealthy to be Unpleasant," for two nights only, April 22 and 23 at 8 p.m. in the Ruth Day Theater, Potter Center. This farce, written by James Kirkwood, will be performed by students in JCC's Acting II class, under the direction of Gary Wetzel-Righettini, associate professor of theatre. It tells the story of UTBU, a wacky organization dedicated to righting the world's ills by exterminating nasty people. The blind leader, William Uggims, is after an actor whose 94-year-old mother won't give him money to produce a play so he intends to hasten her demise with assorted Gothic tortures. The original work was performed on Broadway in 1966, listing Tony Randall among the cast members. The New York Herald Tribune called it "Zany ... and manic," and the New York Journal American said, "It has overtones of 'You Can't Take It With You' compounded with the most flagrant insanity of Olsen and Johnson.... It is impossible not to bust out laughing." General admission tickets for the production may be purchased for $5, plus additional ticket fee, from the Potter Center Ticket Office, 796-8600.
