JCC presents annual awards Jackson Community College presented awards recently to outstanding faculty, staff and administrators for the 2004-05 year. Receiving the J. Ward Preston Outstanding Faculty Award, JCC honored Tom Fleming, professor of criminal justice and corrections. Abby Mortenson, instructor in the sciences, received the Outstanding Adjunct Award. Charlotte Finnegan, assistant dean of foundational studies, received the Outstanding Administrator Award; and Marilynn Fryer, writer in marketing and communication services, received the Outstanding Support Staff Award. Tom Fleming has served on the faculty of JCC since the early 1980s, when he was hired as director of the Southern Michigan Law Enforcement Police Academy formerly held at the College. Before he began teaching, Fleming was chief assistant prosecuting attorney for Jackson County for several years, and served 18 years as special assistant attorney general for the State of Michigan. Fleming is originally a graduate of Jackson Junior College, where he received his associate degree, and he went on to earn his bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan. He earned his juris doctorate law degree from Wayne State University. Recipients are chosen on the basis of excellence in teaching techniques, maintaining a superlative rapport with students, use of innovative and interesting approaches, and a complete sense of dedication consistent with the finest traditions of Jackson Community College. Abby Mortenson has taught a variety of science classes for JCC as an adjunct instructor. She has taught microbiology, natural science, general biology, zoology, and she developed a recombinant DNA technology course that taught students the techniques of genetic engineering, gene splicing and cloning. Mortenson received her bachelor's degree from Purdue University in biology with a concentration in microbiology, and a master's degree from Purdue in cell biology. She also has taught at Albion College, Spring Arbor College, Kellogg Community College and Lansing Community College. She previously worked at the Michigan Department of Community Health in the area of unintentional injury prevention for children. Charlotte Finnegan has served as assistant dean overseeing foundational studies since 2003. With JCC since 1980, Finnegan has taught as an adjunct instructor, worked in the Enterprise Institute and Development Education, and joined Student Development in 1999. She is involved in several campus committees, and has been on countless committees, teams and advisory boards over the years. She was chair of the Jackson Community Leadership Academy in 1998-99, and received JCC's Outstanding Support Staff Award in 2001 when she worked in Student Development. Finnegan received her bachelor's degree from Central Michigan University in journalism, a master's degree in communications from Michigan State University, and a secondary teaching certificate from Eastern Michigan University. She is currently completing her doctorate at MSU in the Higher and Adult Lifelong Education (HALE) program. Marilynn Fryer has worked as writer for JCC's marketing and communications office for four years now. She is involved in writing stories and content for campus publications, such as the Career Choices magazine, brochures, newsletters and more, writing and distributing news releases and information to area media, and she also assists with photography and other marketing functions. Her work has been recognized with awards from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations. She is a 2005 graduate of the Jackson Community Leadership Academy. Prior to joining JCC, she worked in public relations, and previously was the managing editor of the Hillsdale Daily News. She received her bachelor's degree in journalism and political science from Eastern Michigan University, and is currently completing a master's degree at Spring Arbor University. -30- |
