Mary and Martha in real life:  JCC writing instructor

to read poetry from new book

6 p.m. June 16, Bella Notte Restaurant, Jackson

JCC creative writing instructor and writer Deb Davies will be reading from her newly published book, Mary and Martha, at 6 p.m. June 16 at Bella Notte Restaurant's Moonlight Room.  Davies would like to invite people who love poetry and the arts to stop by for hors d'ouevres and conversation.

Mary and Martha, Davies' first book of poetry, was published this spring.  She will use this opportunity to thank Jackson-area writers and poetry lovers for their support, and give them a chance to meet and talk about their work and interests.

Poet Diane Gillam Fisher said Mary and Martha "enacts one of our most basic struggles - that of the need to work, as Zora Neale Hurston puts it, with the need to love.  In this work of reconciliation, deconstruction mixes with laundry, pet rates are 'unfailingly gentle,' and mothers are counter-culture.  Martha finds the time to dream and Mary does dishes in this strong, tender collection in which Davies both laments and celebrates how complex women's lives really are."

The book of poetry is a memoir and a tribute to women's lives and traces 20 years of Davies' life trying to reconcile the tug of war between career and family.  Davies says, "I want to thank some of the people here in Jackson who create a community of writers and caring readers and have helped me to keep writing."

She is an associate professor at JCC and teaches creative writing, composition and literature classes. A suggested donation of $5 may be made to the JCC Language, Literature and Arts program.  JCC writing students and adjunct instructors will be admitted free.  The book, which is normally priced at $14.95, (less 10 percent on Amazon.com) will be available at the reading for $10.
