JCC to begin design process on new Information and Technology Center

Jackson Community College's Board of Trustees Monday gave a go-ahead to administration to design a new Information and Technology Center (ITC) on the main campus, as well as to create a new Center for Health Occupations by remodeling an existing college building.  The cost of the new ITC building and the remodel project is targeted to cost $15 million and will utilize $7.5 million from State Capital Outlay funding and a match of $7.5 million from bonds that will be paid for by annual student facility fee charges.

The College's architect of record, Duce Simmons, will begin designing the new informational & instructional building, which would provide learning tools for the 21st century needs of learners, faculty and community alike.  Conceptually, the structure would provide for the relocated and expanded library, the relocation and expansion of all information technologies, instructional labs, information technology systems, and administrative data management infrastructure.  The building would be "wireless," and will include a large, open, multipurpose student computer lab, smart classrooms, offices, the colleges computer center.

"I think this project is essential to provide the best teaching and research opportunities for this community's best and brightest students," said Trustee Edward Mathein.  "We owe it to our children, to our grandchildren and to our future to provide the basic things they need to succeed in the new economy.  We have been fortunate that the Governor thought enough of our plan to procure a $7.5 million grant for us, and we need to take advantage of that so our students can have the best facilities they can to learn and progress in their chosen fields."
