8/30/05 For immediate release Exploring the past: September programs focus on genealogyWhether you are just starting genealogy or have been researching genealogy for a number of years, you may be able to learn something new from the tips and strategy techniques discussed in these workshops presented by Jackson Community College in September. Genealogy for Beginners @ JCC: Vital Records: Knowing the time period, regional differences, and location of records is an important aspect of any ancestral quest. Civil vital records - births, marriages, and deaths - in America began to be recorded at different time periods in different localities. If recorded vital statistics don't exist in traditional sources, or if the records aren't available, you may be able to use substitute records to document these events. This free genealogy workshop will provide clues and tips on how to research the vital records of the federal, state and local government. Historian Karen Heard from the Atkinson Library will present this workshop at 2 p.m. Sept. 9, Federer Room B, Potter Center. Reservations are requested; call 796-8622 to register. Genealogy for Beginners@ JCC: Census Records: The United States government has conducted population enumerations every 10 years since 1790, and these records provide milestones by helping us physically locate our ancestors in those years. How do you go about finding your ancestors and your extended family in federal and state census records? How can this information be used to search additional records about your ancestors? Historian Karen Heard from the Atkinson Library will present this workshop at 2 p.m. Sept. 23, Federer Room B, Potter Center. Reservations are requested; call 796-8622 to register for this program. Genealogy for Beginners@ JCC: Church Records: Church records rank among the very best genealogical records available. They are also among the most under-used major records in American genealogy. Learn how to search church records and what information is available during this free genealogy workshop that will be presented by historian Karen Heard from the Atkinson Library at 2 p.m. on Sept. 30, Federer Room B, Potter Center. Reservations are requested; call the Atkinson Library at 796-8622 to register. |
