JCC faculty members to present poetic works
Jackson Community College writing faculty members will present their own writings and welcome the works of students during a poetry reading at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, in Bert Walker Hall Room 117 on the main campus.
Students and community members are invited to hear the works of full-time faculty member Deborah Davies, and adjunct faculty members John Yohe, Eric Crosley and Heather Abner. "We have a remarkable group of serious writers here at JCC, and many of them are adjunct instructors," Abner said. "I'd like our students to understand that some of their teachers go home at night not only to grade papers, but also to write poems and fiction."
Davies recently published a book of poetry called Mary and Martha, a memoir and a tribute to women's lives and the tug of war between career and family. She holds a Master of Arts from Michigan State University. John Yohe has a Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing from the New School in New York City, and he has written a chapbook and publishes poems and fiction in numerous literary magazines. Eric Crosley has a Master of Arts degree in creative writing from Michigan State University, and is currently running for Congress. Abner has a Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing from the University of Michigan, and won a Hopwood Award while she was a student there. She has poems published in various literary magazines.
Readers will be presenting for five minutes each. After the featured readers, there will be a discussion of the writing process that touches on topics like invention and prewriting, using description and detail, revision, and more. Time will be provided for students who would like to read their own poems as well.
Refreshments will be available.
