Enjoy creative nonfiction and poetry from JCC faculty

Jackson Community College writing faculty members will present their own writings during a creative nonfiction and poetry reading at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, in Federer Room A, Potter Center.

Students and community members are invited to hear the works of adjunct faculty members Maria Orlowski, Amy Zicafoose, Kawita Kandpal, and new full-time faculty member Diana Agy, composition instructor.

  • Maria Orlowski, writing as Miriam Winter, has penned a memoir, "Trains," of her nearly four years in hiding as a Polish Jew under an assumed Christian identity during the Nazi regime. An adjunct instructor of theater at JCC, she will be reading from her memoirs as a child survivor of the Holocaust. She holds a doctorate in theater from Michigan State University.
  • Amy Zicafoose holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in theater from Michigan State University. She will read from an essay she published in 2002 about stem cell research.
  • Kawita Kandpal holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing from Bowling Green State University. In addition to her duties teaching at JCC, she is a Writer-in-Residence with two Detroit Public Schools. She recently won 2nd place in poetry from the Current Magazine Annual Poetry and Fiction Contest.
  • Diana Agy holds a Master of Arts degree in literature with a writing certificate from Eastern Michigan University, and has lectured at EMU and Monroe County Community College. She joined the teaching faculty at JCC this fall.

Readers will be presenting for 15 minutes each. After the featured readers, there will be a discussion of the writing process that touches on topics like invention and prewriting, using description and detail, revision, and more. Time will be provided for students who would like to read their own poems as well.

Refreshments will be available.
