Community Concert Band begins 19th season with 'Collaboration'

Jackson area music lovers can hear three groups perform in one event as the Jackson Community Concert Band celebrates the opening of their 2005-06 season with a fall concert entitled "Collaboration," featuring the Concert Band as well as Maestro Stephen Osmond and the Jackson Chorale, and the Jackson Community College African Drum Ensemble. The concert will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20, in the Harold Sheffer Music Hall, Potter Center.

Together, these ensembles will perform "Sleep," by Eric Whitacre and "Testament of Freedom" by Randell Thompson. The collaboration theme will be continued when the Chorale is joined by JCC's African Drum Ensemble in a performance of "Missa Luba," a Congolese setting of the liturgical Mass arranged by Guido Haazen and adapted for Ashante instruments by Ronald Douglass. The soloist on "Missa Luba" is Mike Burotovich. In addition to these combined selections, the band will also perform "Metamorphosis (on an original cakewalk)" by Daniel Kallman, and "Pacem, a Hymn for Peace" by Robert Spittal.

The Jackson Community Concert Band is comprised of students and community members, under the direction of Conductor Ronald L. Douglass. Cost is $5, with children 6 and under free and group rates available. For tickets or more information, call (517) 796-8600.
