3/2/06 For immediate release Young artist winner featured in spring concert
The Jackson Community Concert Band will feature 2006 Young Artist Competition winner Brent Clore performing on alto saxophone in a spring concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 26, in the Harold Sheffer Music Hall of Potter Center. Brent Clore, a senior at Albion College, will perform the "Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Wind Ensemble," by composer Robert Muczynski. Clore has served as the lead alto saxophonist in the Albion College Jazz Ensemble from 2002-present, and has been a member of various groups such as the Albion College Jazz Quintet and a saxophone quartet. The Young Artist Competition is designed to encourage young musicians to prepare significant solo works with the goal of performing with the Jackson Community Concert Band. Auditions are held in January, and the winner is featured in the March concert and given a cash prize of $300. The competition is funded by a grant from the Jackson Community College Foundation. The band will also perform "Enigma Variations," by Edward Elgar, Johann Sebastian Bach's "Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor," "The Sinfonians," by Clifton Williams, "Rakoczy March" from "The Damnation of Faust," by Hector Berlioz, and the march "Fairest of the Fair," by John Philip Sousa. The percussion section will also perform an ensemble selection by Donna Bohn. This will be a very exciting concert of great music! Brent Clore biographyAt Albion College, Brent Clore has played lead alto saxophone in the Albion College Jazz Ensemble (2002-present), and has also been a member of various groups such as the Albion College Jazz Quintet and a saxophone quartet. He is currently under the instruction of Paul John Forsyth III. In 2004, Clore received an Outstanding Soloist award at the Elmhurst Jazz Festival. Also in 2004, he was one of three winners of the Albion College Concerto Competition, performing the "Glazunov Concerto" (1934) with the Albion College Orchestra. Clore began learning the saxophone during the summer band program at Middle School at Parkside in 1994 under the instruction of Kevin Krieger. He was a member of the symphonic band at both the Middle School at Parkside and Jackson High School. As a member of the Jackson High School marching band, Clore received the Most Valuable Person award (2001). During his senior year, he received the Vital Viking award - the highest possible award granted to JHS marching band members. He has performed with the Jackson Community Band in the "Front Porch Series" summer concerts (2002-present). He also gives private saxophone and guitar lessons. Clore will graduate with honors from Albion College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in dual majors, political science and philosophy, in May 2006. Recently, he was accepted to the Michigan State University College of Law. |
