JCC President Daniel J. Phelan recognized as outstanding CEO
Jackson Community College is pleased to announce that President Daniel J. Phelan has been recognized by the Association of Community College Trustees as the recipient of the 2006 Central Region Chief Executive Officer Award.
Dr. Phelan was selected for this honor from nominations from the Central Region, which is comprised of Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Wisconsin and Ontario, Canada. He is one of five regional award recipients across the nation, and will be the sole nominee from the Central Region for the prestigious Marie Y. Martin Chief Executive Officer Award, to be presented at the ACCT Community College Leadership Congress in October.
During his five and a half years at the helm of the College, Dr. Phelan has provided strong leadership and guided a number of improvements. He negotiated a successful partnership shortly after arrival at the College in 2001 with Lenawee County's intermediate school district that led to the construction of a new JCC center in Adrian, JCC @ VO-TECH. He provided guidance and leadership to establish the state of Michigan's first corporate university program between JCC and Foote Health System, known as Foote Health University. He has spearheaded renovation of campus facilities, guided plans for construction of the first new building on campus in 25 years, and helped raise funds for two endowed faculty chairs. Dr. Phelan has also taught classes both for JCC and Siena Heights University at JCC.
He is active in the community, serving with the Greater Jackson Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, Jackson Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors, United Way Board of Directors, Rotary Club, St. John's Church, Jackson County Community Foundation Board of Directors, and Datatel Scholars Foundation Board of Directors. He is president of the Michigan Community College Association Board, president of the Community College National Council for Civic Engagement, vice president of Council of North Central Two Year Colleges through the Higher Learning Commission, and vice president of the Continuous Quality Improvement Network.
Dr. Phelan and his wife, Nancy, have three daughters, Katie, Michelle and Maggie.
