Herman’s Hermits to perform at Potter Center

Enjoy all of the classic hits of legendary 1960s pop band, Herman’s Hermits with Peter Noone, as the group performs at the Jackson Community College Potter Center at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20.

Part of the British Invasion, Herman’s Hermits brought a simple, non-threatening “boys next door” image that made them more accessible than other British Invasion bands. Originating in Manchester, England, the band started as a dance hall and youth club attraction, and first hit the charts in 1964 with “I’m Into Something Good.” They followed it up with “Show Me Girl,” and “Silhouettes.” In the U.S. they took “Can’t You Hear My Heartbeat” to No. 2. They got a big break in the U.S. when a DJ heard “Mrs. Brown You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter” on their first U.S. album and persuaded their record company, MGM, to release it as a single. It spent three weeks on top of the charts, earning another gold record and coinciding with the group’s first full U.S. tour. Following this success, they released a number of songs in the U.S. that had a music hall or Vaudeville edge to them, including “I’m Henry the Eighth (I Am).” In 1966, their single “Listen People” reached No. 3 on the American charts and earned another gold record, and later that year, “A Kind of Hush” made it to No. 4 in the U.S. The group continued to record into the early 1970s, when Peter Noone left to pursue a solo career.

Ticket costs are $26, $23 and $20 and may be purchased by calling either the Potter Center Ticket Office at 517.796.8600, or online at www.jccmi.edu/events.
