JCC Winter enrollment grows

Jackson Community College’s Winter semester enrollment is snowballing, headcount is up 300 students over opening day Fall semester and billing contact hours are at the highest level since 1980. Students continue to register this week and enrollment for Session II winter classes continue.

For the opening day of winter semester, the number of billing contact hours on the main campus was up 13 percent, while Internet classes rose 22 percent; headcount was 5,645 students, compared to 5,223 in 2006.

“The College is very pleased to see the increase in enrollment. Our employees are now seeing the fruits of their labors with the hard work put forth in recruiting, marketing and specific initiatives in our enrollment management plan and the college’s strategic plan,” said Cindy Allen, executive director of community relations and the performing arts. “The 14 percent increase in the number of full-time students compared to last winter, and a 37 percent increase from five years ago, indicates that more and more students are making Jackson Community College their choice for their higher educational needs.” Currently 55 percent of all full-time students are under the age of 22.

“Numerous factors play into the increased enrollment figures,” said JCC President Daniel J. Phelan, “such as the College’s enhanced efforts to connect with the community and communicate more about its programs and services, improved services in advising, recruitment and registration, and quality instruction in the classrooms.” All of these factors contribute to less dependence on the highs and lows in enrollment sometimes associated with the current state of the economy and unemployment.

Session II classes for winter begin Jan. 22. The course schedule is available online at www.jccmi.edu, or at any JCC location.
