Brush up on important skills with continuing education courses in Hillsdale

Jackson Community College’s Clyde LeTarte Center in Hillsdale will be offering several non-credit courses during the Spring/Summer 2008 semester.

These continuing education classes will be offered to help area residents gain useful skills. All classes are open to the public, but children under 16 must be accompanied by a paying adult. Minimum age to enroll is 14. Registration will begin April 7; those who have never taken classes at JCC will need to complete an application. Applications may be completed online and registrations can be done in person, via fax (517.437.0232), or by mail. Payment can be made with cash, check or credit card and is due at the time of registration. Please call the JCC Hillsdale LeTarte Center at 517.437.3343 with any questions.

Courses will include:

  • Professionalism, 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 23; $12. This workshop will cover brief introductions to the components of professionalism. Components include: honesty/ integrity, reliability/ responsibility, respect for others, compassion/ empathy, communication/ collaboration, and self-improvement/ self-awareness.
  • The One Minute Self-Sell, 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, April 30; $18. Do you want to make a good impression? This workshop will help students learn the quickest and most successful way to sell people on yourself, your services, products and/or ideas, at work and in life.
  • Fractions and Decimals, 3:30-5:30 p.m. on two Tuesdays and two Thursdays, April 22, 24, 29 and May 1; $48. This course will cover adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions, common denominators, converting fractions to decimals, making fractions into percentages, changing decimals to fractions and reducing, converting repeating decimals to fractions and cross multiplying. In order to get the most out of this session, make sure you can do basic addition, subtracting, multiplying and dividing without a calculator.
  • Intro to Computers, 9-11 a.m. May 3 and 10 or 5:30-7:30 p.m. May 30 and June 6; $29. This course is designed for those with little or no computer experience. Learn computer terminology, how to use the mouse and keyboard effectively and the basic functions of Microsoft® Windows®. If you need to start from the point of turning it on, this class is for you!
  • Understanding/ Using the Internet, 9 a.m. to noon May 31, or 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. June 13; $23. Topics to be covered are: Internet buzz words, e-mail, SPAM and how to filter it, dangers of the Internet, downloading information, surfing the net, browsers, ISP’s, newsgroups, plug-ins, portals, and online auctions. Basic computer knowledge will help in this session.
  • The Basics of Microsoft® Word®, 9-11 a.m. Saturday June 7 & 14; $29. Students will create, edit and save documents, manipulate and formulate text and paragraphs, find and replace text and use proofing tools. To have fun in this class, it helps if you already are familiar with the keyboard and mouse, and have basic knowledge of saving files.
  • The Basics of Microsoft® Word® Continued, 9-11 a.m. Saturday, June 21 & 28; $29. Students will use templates, create letters, envelopes, and labels, use styles, outlines, headers and footers, use columns, and use graphic elements in documents. Make your next family newsletter look spiffy! Basic Word® knowledge will help you in this class.
  • The Basics of Microsoft® Excel®, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, June 20 & 27; $29. Students will learn to create, modify, format, enhance and print worksheets. What’s a worksheet? A worksheet has cells, rows, and columns. It’s time to organize your data! Previous basic computer knowledge will help you be successful in this class.
  • The Basics of Microsoft® Excel® Continued, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, July 11 & 18; $29. Students will learn about basic formula and functions, use of multiple worksheets, work with charts, protect worksheet data, share worksheet data, and manipulate the screen display. You should have basic Excel® knowledge to enjoy this class.
