Volleyball team plans breast cancer benefit match

The battle for a cure against breast cancer will take to the volleyball court when Jackson Community College’s women’s volleyball team hosts a Breast Cancer Survivor Benefit Match against Siena Heights University at JCC at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 19 in the Victor Cuiss Fieldhouse on the Jackson campus.

“We wanted to do something to promote our sport locally while doing something to give back,” said volleyball coach Leigh Ann Swihart. “Breast cancer is so common that almost every person has been touched by or knows someone that has either passed away from or survived breast cancer. The scary thing is that, detected early, there is a very high survival rate, yet many women die from this disease every year.”

Swihart and the Siena Heights coach, Susan Kelly, thought this would be a great cause to get the colleges working together on and helping out the community in the effort.  Each player and coach sponsored a survivor or memorial person for the match, and each person or family member will be invited and recognized at the start of the game. There will also be a “Real Men Wear Pink” contest with some of JCC’s administrators and coaches, as well as a jersey auction, serve contest raffle, and during the game all the players will call someone they know over 40 and remind them to get a mammogram.

Donations will be accepted to benefit the American Cancer Society and breast cancer research.
