Linden Dungy to speak at 2009 Martin Luther King Celebration

Jackson Community College will present its annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17 in the Potter Center.

Speaker for this year’s event will be Dr. Linden Dungy, son of former JCC professor Dr. Wilbur Dungy, brother to NFL coach Tony Dungy and 2006 MLK speaker Dr. Lauren Dungy-Poythress. He will speak on “The Content of Your Character.”

Dungy grew up in Jackson, graduated from Parkside High School and attended Grand Valley State University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry in 1982. He then continued his studies at the University of Minnesota Dental School, earning his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1986. He is the founder and chief executive officer of Immanuel Dental in Farmington, Minn.

Three local citizens will be honored with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Medal of Service Awards: Frances Reeves, principal of McCulloch Academy of Technology and Science; Ernestine Simmons, retired teacher; and Frank Weathers, community relations liaison for the city of Jackson.

Ticket prices for the King celebration dinner are $20 for adults and $12 for students, and may be purchased at the Martin Luther King Center, 1107 Adrian St., Jackson, or at the JCC Potter Center Box Office, 517.796.8600.
