About the program...

GVSU offers a Master’s of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT). The master’s program is a six-year program which is divided into two parts. The first part, for incoming freshmen, consists of three years of pre-professional course work which includes courses in natural, health, and social sciences and GVSU general education courses. During the three years of pre-professional, liberal course work, the student acquires the fundamental values essential to occupational therapy. Occupational therapy, like liberal education, values individual and collaborative problem-solving, critical thinking, lifelong learning, and a broad understanding of diverse cultures and perspectives.

In the second stage of the MSOT program, students apply for admission to the professional curriculum. Applications are accepted in the Fall of the student’s junior year. Upon acceptance into the program, the professional course work begins in the fourth year. During the next three years, students take additional courses in human anatomy and physiology, human development, occupational therapy theory and practice, clinical reasoning, leadership, education, research, and professional socialization. As part of the program, students must complete a thesis or a research project and participate in two levels of fieldwork experiences.
