Transfer Information

July 2007

JACKSON COMMUNITY COLLEGE
For Transfer to Western Michigan University
College of Education
Special Education - Programs

This is only a guide.  Students should contact the transfer school for program advising.

It is recommended that elementary-focused students transfer after one year at JCC, and contact WMU their first semester at JCC to learn about requirements for admission to the program.  Secondary-focused students should also contact WMU for advising about best time to transfer.

All undergraduate students who declare a curriculum leading to a teaching certificate will be assigned a pre-education code (PED) at the time of admission.  The primary purpose of this code is to identify students who intend to enter the teaching profession.  Selection is competitive and admission takes place only once a year.  The following are only the minimum requirements which must be met for consideration and do not guarantee admission to the Special Education program:

  • Completion of at least 56 credit hours (spring semester hours may be counted)
  • Completion of ENG 131, 132
  • Completion of PSY 252 with grade of "C" (2.0) or better
  • Achievement of a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of a minimum of 2.5 at the time of application
  • Receipt of passing scores on the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) - Basic Skills Section at the time of application
  • Documentation of thirty clock hours of experience with person(s) with a disability
  • Documentation of current TB test
  • Completion and submission of the College of Education application for admission by January 15 to the Office of Admissions and Advising, 2504 Sangren Hall

Students will be notified in mid-February as to whether they have been accepted to the Special Education program.  If not accepted, the student may reapply the following year, or switch to an elementary or secondary education program.

STUDENTS INTERESTED IN SPECIAL EDUCATION: VISUAL IMPAIRMENT: Although the undergraduate program in Teacher of Children with Visual Impairments (TCVI) has been discontinued, there is still an option for undergraduates interested in teaching children with visual impairments that will take only two semesters longer to complete than the original program.  Undergraduates interested in TCVI are encouraged to complete a BS in regular elementary education.  They are then encouraged to complete an MA in TCVI.  The combined BS and MA will only take 2 semesters longer than the original undergraduate program and federal funding is available to pay for tuition and cost of living while students are pursuing the MA in TCVI.  The new graduate level training in TCVI is much more comprehensive than the original undergraduate program and prospective teachers are provided more support and a better quality program.
