EMS 163 Paramedic Cardiology: I (2.25 CR)

This is a course designed to provide knowledge in cardiology
to fulfill the needs of the paramedic program. This course involves
medical procedures and use of equipment as stated by the U.S. Department
of Transportation, Michigan Department of Community Health, and the American
Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support standards. Topics include:
rapid interpretation of EKGs, static recognition of EKGs, electrical therapy,
pharmacological therapy, and basic algorithms for treatment of cardiac arrhythmias.
- By the completion of EMS 163 the paramedic candidate will be able to demonstrate entry level cognitive and psychomotor competency in fields of study such as; rapid interpretation of EKGs, static recognition of EKGs, electrical therapy, pharmacological therapy, and basic algorithms for treatment of cardiac arrhythmias.
Measurement of Objective
- Student must achieve a passing score of 85% on the written Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) written exam. This exam measures the paramedic candidate’s ability to critical think through the process of gathering patient assessment data and the ability to rule out nonessential patient information to develop a basic clinical diagnosis. This exam also measures the candidate’s ability to treat dynamic cardiac rhythm interpretation.
- Student must achieve a passing score on of 100% Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) practical exam. This hands on exam measures the paramedic candidate on their ability to problem solve during cardiopulmonary resuscitation using advanced life support interventions.
- Successful completion of EMS 163 will lead to progression as a Paramedic candidate for certification with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. Completion of this course will meet requirements for entry into EMS 173. Students who have successfully demonstrated cognitive and psychomotor entry level competency will also be awarded a certification as an Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Provider.
