Confidentiality of Students' Academic Records

Confidentiality of students’ JCC records is protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). This law says that after a student enrolls in college, even if they are under 18, that student’s parent or guardian may not view that student’s academic records, without written consent of the student.

In compliance with FERPA, JCC maintains the following procedures:

  • JCC officials, including instructors and academic advisors, cannot discuss the specifics of a student’s academic, financial, and/or disciplinary situation, unless the student is present and willingly agrees to share the information.
  • All correspondence from JCC regarding academic, financial, and disciplinary issues is addressed to the student and mailed to the address the student has provided to Student Services.

Parents of new JCC students often ask how they may find out their student’s grades. JCC expects each student to assume full responsibility for their own academic progress, which includes the appropriate communication of that progress to their parent(s) or guardian. It is important that you maintain an open relationship with your student so that they will be comfortable discussing their academic progress with you.
