Health Unit Coordinator
Certificate
This Certificate in Health Unit Coordinating prepares the student for an entry-level position in a hospital or other inpatient facility (i.e. nursing home, extended care facility) as a health unit coordinator. The educational program includes introduction to the use of computers, body structure and function and medical terminology, business communications, oral communications, telephone techniques, medical record keeping, transcription of physician orders onto Kardex, charting, ordering supplies, keeping supply records, human relations, medical law and ethics, and financing health care. Actual on-the-job experience is provided through a non-paid externship at a hospital facility.
The Health Unit Coordinator Certificate has special admission requirements.
a. Course placement assessment - Students with an ACT composite of 18 and mathematics score of 18 meet the competencies and are exempt from course placement.
b. A completion of MOA 110, ITE 101, and MOA 112 or 6 months of experience working in a health care setting with department permission is required to register for MOA 207 and MOA 208.
c. Student must successfully pass (2.0 or better) the classroom/lab course, MOA 207 to be placed on hospital externship experience in MOA 208.
d. During the first semester, the student must meet with the program coordinator.
