Certified Corrections Officer
Program Guide Sheet
In Michigan, the Department of Corrections requires 15 credits of post-secondary
education within 18 months of being hired as a corrections officers. Of
the courses we offer at JCC, these credits must be in the areas of criminal
justice (CRJ), sociology (SOC), and or psychology (PSY). It is preferred,
but not mandatory, that students successfully completed five
specific courses designated by the Michigan Department of Corrections (CRJ 119, 120, 121, 124 and 127).
Special Requirements: The State of Michigan requires that all corrections officers
working for the state must be certified by the Michigan Department of Corrections. They
must pass a Michigan Civil Service exam; have a high school diploma or equivalent; be at
least 18 years old; and have acquire at least 15 semester credits from an accredited
post-secondary educational school (credits must be in an area of study specified by the
Department) within 18 months of hire. Applicants must also pass a drug screening test*, a background check**, a
physical exam and an oral interview.
*Failure of drug screen for any drug results in permanent elimination from
consideration for employment, even if the positive results are from taking someone
elses valid prescription.
**Any individual who has been convicted of a felony or domestic violence cannot be
hired. No consideration can be given to any applicant who is on misdemeanor probation, has
outstanding warrants, or has any controlled substance (drug) related conviction in any
jurisdiction. This includes military dismissal related to drugs. In addition, an applicant
for employment who has been convicted of any other misdemeanor shall not be eligible for
employment until one year after satisfactory completion of any sentence imposed, including
probation.
Hiring consideration is based on the applicants rating, desired work location and
the Department of Corrections hiring needs. A physical exam will be done in conjunction
with a job offer. An applicant who has a medical restriction that would hinder the
performance of all essential job functions of a Corrections Officers job cannot be
hired. An applicant must be able to wear a gas mask and a self-contained breathing
apparatus.
Students planning to enter the Certified Corrections Officer Program must complete the
course placement assessment*** given at JCC.
A minimum grade of 2.0 must be earned in each course.

***Students with an ACT composite of 18 and mathematics score of 18 meet the
competencies and are exempt from course placement assessment. Students who complete course
placement and who do not receive a minimum of 41 in reading and 1 or 2 in writing on the
course placement assessment are not eligible to enroll in more than three CRJ courses in
one semester. They may enroll in courses in the following sequence:

Each corrections course must be completed with a 2.0 to meet the requirement of the
Michigan Correctional Officers Training Council for all students seeking to apply for a
position as a corrections officer.
