JACKSON COMMUNITY COLLEGE
This is only a guide. It is highly recommended that you complete the MACRAO agreement prior to transferring from Jackson Community College. Students having met the MACRAO agreement and completed 58 credit hours, will be accepted as having fulfilled the freshman and sophomore GENERAL EDUCATION requirements unless otherwise specified by a particular major. Students not completing the MACRAO Agreement or with questions regarding General Education required for their major should contact Spring Arbor University at (517) 474-6674 or stop by the McDivitt Hall University Center, room 124. Note: Students do not need to complete all the courses listed below before transferring. Complete the MACRAO agreement using courses required in your major/minors. Then complete other courses as outlined for your chosen major/minors.
Option 1: Complete a major chosen from the following fields with a minimum GPA of 2.60 and no course grade below 2.0: English, History, Language Arts, Mathematics, Music (must be completed by 6/30/10), Physical Education (K-12), Social Studies, Spanish, Special Education: Learning Disabilities. Option 2: Complete two minors chosen from the following fields with a minimum GPA of 2.60 and no course grade below 2.0: English, History, Integrated Science, Language Arts, Mathematics, Music (must be completed by 6/30/10), Physical Education Elementary, Social Studies, Spanish, Speech.
Courses offered at JCC which are required for majors/minors: English Major: ENG 249 or 236, 252, 255, 256, 257. Minor: ENG 249 or 236, 252, 255, 256, 257. [Recommendation: major or minor in Language Arts rather than English for elementary education.] History Major: HIS 131, 132, 231, 232; ECN 231, GEO 131 or 132; PLS141. Minor: HIS 131, 132, 231, 232; ECN 231, GEO 131 or 132; PLS141. Other HIS courses may be used as required electives in the major or minor. [Recommendation: major or minor in Social Studies rather than History for elementary ed.] Integrated Science (minor only): BIO 131or 132 or 151; CEM 131 or 137 or 141; PHY 131; PHY 151; GEL 160; NSC 131--if JCC EDU Focus Section. Language Arts Major: ENG 236 or 249, 255, 256, 257, 261; SPH 234. Minor: ENG 236 or 249, 255, 257, 261; SPH 234. Mathematics Major: MTH 133, 151, 154, 251. Minor: MTH 151, 133. Music Major or Minor: MUS 151, 152, 251, 252, private instruction and group performance. Physical Education (K-12): BIO 155. Minor: No JCC equivalencies. Social Studies Major: ECN 231; BUA 111; GEO 131 or 132; HIS 131 or 132, HIS 231; PLS 141. Other ECN, GEO, HIS, PLS courses may be used for required electives. Minor: ECN 231, BUA 111, GEO 131 or 132; HIS 131 or 132; HIS 231, PLS 141. Spanish Major: SPN 231, 232; requires a minimum of 12 weeks of study in an approved language program in a Spanish-speaking country. Minor: SPN 231, 232; requires four credit hours (usually 3 weeks) to be obtained in an approved language study in a Spanish-speaking country. Special Education – Learning Disabilities (K-12): No JCC equivalencies. Speech (minor only): SPH 234, 240. Other SPH courses may be used as required electives.
SAU School of Education Admissions requirements: To be admitted to the Teacher Certification Program, the student’s formal application must be approved by the Spring Arbor University School of Education. Students must meet the standards for admission and for program requirements for the Professional Education Sequence that are in effect at the time of the submission of their applications. Students should obtain a copy of these standards from the Spring Arbor University School of Education office or the Spring Arbor University office at JCC. One of these standards is satisfactory performance on the Michigan Basic Skills Test. It is recommended the test be taken in the second semester of the freshman year or the first semester of the sophomore year. It is helpful for most people to complete a mathematics course prior to taking the test. This is only a guide.
