COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
Elementary Education

Students planning to major in elementary education have three options

OPTION I: General Elementary Education
You must complete three minors:
Elementary Group Minors (EGM)

·         Elementary Education Minor (EED 26-31 hours) - comprised of 300-400 level courses taken after admission to the College of Education (Professional Program) - it includes student teaching

·         Select two (2) of the following four (4) minors.  Some of the minors require careful planning in order to proceed efficiently.

1.       Elementary and Middle School Mathematics (MAT)

2.       Elementary Integrated Science (SCI)

3.       Elementary Language Arts

4.       Elementary Social Studies (SOE)

You will receive teacher certification in Kindergarten - 5 grade in all subjects and grades 6 – 8 in your second and third minors.  You will also be certified to teach Kindergarten – 8 grades in all subjects when teaching in a self-contained classroom.  A self-contained classroom is defined as one in which the majority of instruction will be provided by one teacher.

OPTION II: Early Childhood Education
You must complete three minors:
Elementary Group Minors (EGM)

·         Elementary Childhood Professional Education Minor (ECH)

·         Select two (2) of the following four (4) minors.  Some of the minors require careful planning in order to proceed efficiently.

OPTION III: Specific Program Majors – contact WMU directly if you plan to take this option
DO NOT FOLLOW THIS GUIDESHEET!

You may select one of the following major and minor combinations:

1) Physical Education (PYE) major – Elementary or Early Childhood Education (EED/ECH) minor

For this program, you will receive teacher certification Kindergarten – 12 grade in your major, Kindergarten – 5 grade in all subjects, and Kindergarten – 8 in all subjects when teaching in a self-contained classroom.  A self-contained classroom is defined as one in which the majority of instruction will be provided by one teacher.

3) Music (MUS) major - Elementary or Early Childhood Education (EED/ECH) minor

4) Speech Pathology and Audiology (SPN) major - Elementary or Early Childhood Education (EED/ECH) minor

These three majors require admission to the specific program, and you must contact the appropriate area.  Elementary music majors will receive teacher certification Kindergarten – 8 grade in music, Kindergarten – 5 grade in all subjects, and Kindergarten – 8 in all subjects when teaching in a self-contained classroom.  Art and Speech Pathology majors will receive Kindergarten – 12 grade certification in the major area, Kindergarten – 5 grade in all subjects, and Kindergarten – 8 in all subjects when teaching in a self-contained classroom.  A self-contained classroom is defined as one in which the majority of instruction will be provided by one teacher.

·         This is only a guide.  Students should contact the transfer school for program advising.

·         Coursework with a grade of at least 2.0 will be transferable.

·         Students do not need to complete all the courses listed below before transferring.

·         It is strongly recommended that students complete the MACRAO Agreement.  When possible students will want to plan so that courses in teachable minors count toward courses in the MACRAO Agreement.
