Pre-education requirements for students pursing a
Secondary Education Major in the College of Arts & Sciences

All undergraduate students who declare a preference for a curriculum leading to a teaching certificate will be assigned the pre-education designator (PED) at the time of admission.  The primary purpose of this designation is to identify students who intend to enter the teaching profession.  This permits the College of Education’s Office of Admission and Advising to monitor each student’s progress toward certification.

Students, with a secondary education major in the College of Arts & Sciences must complete the following requirements to enter the Secondary Education (SED) Program:

  • Completion of at least 35 credit hours
  • Completion of ENG 131, 132
  • Completion of ED 200, Introduction to American Education (to be taken at Western Michigan University).  Note: If you are transferring prior to Fall, 2005 the College of Education will accept completion of PSY 252 with grade of "C" (2.0) or better to meet this requirement.
  • Receipt of passing scores on the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) - Basic Skills Section
  • Achievement of a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or better
