grade of at least 2.0 will be transferable.

It is strongly
recommended that students complete the MACRAO Agreement.
When possible
students will want to plan so that courses in teachable majors and minors count
toward courses in the MACRAO Agreement.

Pre-education
requirements for students pursing a
Secondary Education Major in the College of Arts & Sciences
All undergraduate
students who declare a preference for a curriculum leading to a teaching
certificate will be assigned the pre-education designator (PED) at the
time of admission. The primary purpose of this designation is to
identify students who intend to enter the teaching profession.
This permits the College of Education’s Office of Admission and Advising
to monitor each student’s progress toward certification.
Students, with a
secondary education major in the
College of
Arts & Sciences must complete the following requirements to enter the Secondary
Education (SED) Program:

Completion of at least
35 credit hours
-
Completion of ENG 131,
132
-
Completion of ED
200, Introduction to American Education (to be taken at
Western
Michigan
University). Note:
If you are transferring prior to Fall, 2005 the College of Education
will accept completion of PSY 252 with grade of "C" (2.0) or better to
meet this requirement.

Receipt of passing
scores on the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) - Basic
Skills Section
-
Achievement of a
cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or better
-
Completion of a formal
application. Effective February, 2005: Once the above requirements
are met, students must submit a completed application to the College of
Education Office or Admissions and Advising. That is, as of
February, 2005, there will be “rolling admissions” rather than the “one
yearly admit date.”
Approved Majors and

for Secondary Education Certification
A Secondary Provisional
Certificate shall be valid for teaching in your subject areas (major and
minor) in grades 7-12.
You must choose at least
one of the following majors and one of the following minors. You
should meet with both the major and minor advisors. Some of the
majors and minors listed have requirements which must be met before you
will be allowed to proceed in the area of study. For the JCC
courses you should take go to the transfer guide for the major and minor
you choose. Not all majors and minors would have courses available
at JCC. List of teachable majors and minors on following page.

Music and Art Education
Programs
The K-12 Music
Education (MUE) and Art Education (ATE) programs do not require a
minor. Admission into these programs is selective. Students
who are interested in these programs should contact either the Music
Advising Office at (269) 387-4672 or the Art Advising Office at (269)
387-2440.
Health, Physical
Education & Recreation and Family & Consumer Sciences Programs
Students
selecting a major listed below will be certified to teach in their major
subject in grades K-12. Students must also select an approved
minor. The student will be certified to teach in grades 7-12 in
the minor. You should meet with both the major and minor advisors.
Some of the majors and minors listed have requirements that must be met
before you will be allowed to proceed in the area of study. For
the JCC courses you should take go to the transfer guide for the
minor you choose. Contact Western Michigan University for
courses in the major.
