Center for Student Success English as a Second LanguageThese courses are designed for students whose native language is not English. Students should be tested for proficiency level prior to enrolling. Telephone or e-mail for an appointment for testing: susan_berendes-wood@jccmi.edu Students may remain at a level and re-enroll until they have attained the skills necessary for the next proficiency level. This course uses a text, workbook, and audiotape. The text pack is available for purchase in the JCC bookstore. Susan Berendes-Wood, instructor BeginningThis course is designed for students with little or no background in English. Students learn beginning skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
BasicThis course is designed for students who have some knowledge of English but struggle to communicate with native speakers. Students at the basic level focus on using English to get along in the community. Students learn strategies that will help them communicate with more success.
IntermediateThis course is designed for students with an understanding of some English grammar and who can communicate with native speakers. At this level, students increase their vocabulary and their understanding of grammatical structures. They continue to practice the four skills and enhance their communication strategies.
AdvancedThis course is designed for students who understand and employ many English grammatical structures and converse with native speakers. Students at this level practice advanced comprehension strategies and continue to refine their communication skills. Advanced students should be able to achieve success in academic classes with native speakers.
