Center for Student Success

Writing Center

Writing assistance is provided by the Center for Student Success located inside the Walker Hall Learning Resources Center. The center is staffed by trained professionals and by student consultants. All members of the staff have experience and knowledge in written communication. The student consultants have been recommended by at least one writing instructor.

What we do:

  • We can help with writing papers, essays, lab reports, and written assignments. We aid in brainstorming topics, organizing ideas, rough drafts, editing, proofreading, and any step of the writing process.
  • Students, staff, or faculty may come to the center because an instructor has referred them, a friend has recommended the center, or on their own.
  • We work with each person based on his/her individual needs.

What we do not do:

  • We do not correct a student’s work. Instead, we teach proofreading strategies.
  • We do not predict grades or the success of an assignment.
  • We do not rewrite or retype student papers. Instructors are assured that a paper is not co-authored by a consultant.
  • We promote strategies to help readers read better. We do not tutor in subject matter for coursework.
  • We counsel about plagiarism and advise changes if necessary, but we do not accept responsibility if a paper is submitted with plagiarized text.

Reading

We assist students in understanding what they read in textbooks, articles and homework assignments. We aim to teach strategies to read better, not read the text for the student.

Study Skills

We offer ideas for taking notes, preparing for tests, and tips on organizing study time. Every student has a different approach to learning, and there are methods to accommodate these approaches.
