Basketball, volleyball seasons canceled for Jackson College Jets
January 11, 2021
With the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, Jackson College’s Leadership Council has decided to cancel the men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball seasons.
In July, the College shifted all close-contact sports to the winter semester. After careful consideration, plans have changed for these three sports, which will be canceled. A protocol is being established for men’s and women’s bowling and hopes are to allow the spring outdoor sports baseball, softball, golf, and soccer to continue.
“Simply put, with the number of COVID-19 cases and the emergence of a highly contagious strain, we didn’t feel it would be safe for our students,” said Jeremy Frew, vice president of instruction and student services. “We didn’t think there was a safe way to have the seasons.”
All sports this season have received an NJCAA blanket waiver and will not have the 2020-21 year count towards their two seasons of eligibility at the two-year level.
Jackson College classes continue primarily online as the winter semester begins, with limited in-person labs offered with careful protocols in place. Leadership and the College’s Reintegration Task Force continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation with hopes to allow more in-person classes for later in the semester and more students to return to housing at a lower capacity.
