Dr. Edward Mathein honored for service

Jackson College congratulates Board of Trustees member Dr. Edward Mathein, named the 2019 Trustee Leadership Award recipient for the Central Region of the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT).

Mathein has served on the Jackson College Board of Trustees since 1998 and was Board Chair from 2008-’12. He is an alumnus of Jackson Junior College, graduating in 1961. Dr. Mathein practiced dentistry in Jackson for 50 years. Although he is retired, he still offers his services at the Center for Family Health Dental Clinic.

His service to the College stems from his own experience. “I was always grateful for the opportunities I had at Jackson Junior College because it put me on my career path. I was grateful for what I’ve been able to achieve and proud of the institution,” Mathein said. He first became involved with the Alumni Association and the Jackson College Foundation Board of Directors before deciding to run for trustee. Two of the initiatives that he is most proud of as a trustee have been the launch of the Jackson Preparatory and Early College and the start of the dental hygiene program and clinic. “Both of those were multi-year efforts to get up and running,” he said.

Additionally, Mathein has represented the College on the Michigan Community College Association Board since 2008 and was the MCCA state treasurer from 2008-’12. “One of the unique things about Michigan is that we have this collaborative effort between the 28 community colleges. You can address concerns in a timely manner, especially when community and economic needs require you to be a bit more limber,” he said.

ACCT’s Regional Awards recognize the tremendous contributions made by community colleges and their leaders to meet the needs of their communities. Individuals recognized at the regional level will contend for national-level recognitions, to be announced in October.
