Register now for fall classes hosted at Jackson’s King Center

Jackson residents can take college classes close to home this fall! Continuing to further connect with the downtown community, Jackson College will offer courses at Jackson’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Center.

Jackson College, in cooperation with the City of Jackson, will offer courses leading to an entrepreneurship certificate, a 19-credit credential that may be completed in three semesters.

“This is one of those unique times where I get to wear both a hat as an affinity liaison for the College and hat as mayor and advocate for both of those places that I work,” said Daniel Mahoney, mayor of the City of Jackson and affinity liaison to the African-American community for Jackson College. “This shows great leadership from our president and board to go down this route, to help more students attempt classes and be successful at the College. It’s also a great opportunity for the King Center to expand its offerings. Not every person who walks into the King Center is interested in basketball or sports. It really is like a home base for everyone who lives in that part of the city. Having college classes right in the community is a powerful opportunity.”

The study of entrepreneurship benefits those looking to further their education or make their business more successful by educating themselves, Mahoney said. “With so many people seeing the benefit of having a business or starting a business, it’s very timely,” he said. “We’re also looking at how we can grow the program and what more can we offer students in town to attract more black and brown students to College and expand what we offer as a city recreation center.”

All students are welcome to enroll, from traditional-aged students recently out of high school to returning adult students. Courses at the King Center are taught by Jackson College faculty, with offerings on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
