Winter Film Series features favorites old and new

Explore filmmaking and movies from classic to contemporary when Jackson College’s 43rd Annual Winter Film Series kicks off Jan. 14.

The Winter Film Series is held annually at the Michigan Theatre in downtown Jackson as part of the College’s English 210 Films as Literature class. Community members are welcome. Jan. 14 – “The General” (1926) When Union spies steal an engineer’s beloved locomotive, Johnnie pursues it single-handedly and straight through enemy lines. A silent film classic with Buster Keaton.

Jan. 21 – “Crazy Rich Asians” (2018) This contemporary romantic comedy, based on a global bestseller, follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu to Singapore to meet her boyfriend’s family.

Jan. 28 – “Frida” (2002) A biography of artist Frida Kahlo, who channeled the pain of a crippling injury and her tempestuous marriage into her work.

Feb. 4 – “On the Waterfront” (1954) An ex-prize fighter turned longshoreman struggles to stand up to his corrupt union bosses.

Feb. 11 – “When Harry Met Sally” (1989) Old friends Harry and Sally consider a romance after several failed relationships.

Feb. 18 – “Roma” — A story that chronicles a year in the life of a middle-class family’s maid in Mexico City in the early 1970s.

Feb. 25 – “A Star is Born” (2018) A musician helps a young singer find fame, even as age and alcoholism send his own career into a downward spiral.

March 4 – “E.T.” (1982) A troubled child summons the courage to help a friendly alien escape Earth and return to his home world.

March 11 – no movie, spring break

March 18 – “Singin’ in the Rain” (1952) Song and dance favorite with Gene Kelly about a silent film production company and cast make a difficult transition to sound.

March 25 – Documentary TBD

April 1 – “If Beale Street Could Talk” (2018) A woman in Harlem desperately scrambles to prove her fiancé innocent of a crime while carrying their first child.
