Home / Campus News / Adjunct instructor recognized as Employee of Year by EduStaff!
Congratulations to Jackson College instructor Timothy Speck, named Higher Education Employee of the Year for 2025 by EduStaff!
Timothy is an adjunct professor of history and political science for the Corrections Education Program at Jackson College. He teaches at Michigan correctional facilities in Adrian, Ypsilanti, Milan and Jackson.
He was nominated for the honor by Thomas Largent, adjunct and evening administrator at Jackson College.
“His dedication goes beyond just showing up; students consistently praise his passion for the material in their feedback surveys. Timothy’s enthusiasm and commitment have made a lasting impact, ensuring his students receive a meaningful and engaging educational experience no matter where he’s teaching,” he said.
Speck had a strong interest in history in politics when he was an undergrad student but ended up in the corporate world for most of his career. He went back to school in 2013 to embark on a mid-career change and says he has never regretted it.
Teaching in correctional facilities has been even more rewarding than his experiences teaching in traditional colleges. The students are more engaged, focused, and goal-oriented, he said. “It’s never difficult to get the discussions going and the CEP students respond enthusiastically to the material.”
Many of his students continue their education beyond the prison program, which he finds particularly gratifying.
“The ability to effect positive change in people’s lives, be that conduit, and see people learn and grow – it’s just awesome,” he said, “A lot of people had given up and thought they weren’t capable, but they all are, they all have it within them. You just have to find that and nurture it.”
When he’s not teaching, Timothy’s hobbies include outdoor activities like camping, canoeing, and hiking.
“Every opportunity I get, I’m out in nature,” he said. “It’s necessary to rejuvenate and be grounded.”
