Bert H. Walker gave untiringly of himself in efforts to establish Jackson Community College. He worked on the committee that successfully campaigned for the creation of a countywide community college district in 1962, and he became the first chairman of the new community college Board of Trustees. He guided the board when the name was changed to Jackson Community College and during campus move from downtown to Summit Township. He served as chairman from 1962-’67. At the first board meeting without Walker, trustees voted unanimously to name a new classroom building Bert H. Walker Hall. The new classroom building was dedicated in his honor in 1971.

Mr. Walker maintained his interest in the College over the years, as well as serving in area manufacturing associations and location community organizations. Although he passed away in 1994, his legacy to the students and community live on at Jackson College.
